A WOMAN had her bag snatched by a cyclist.

The 34-year-old victim was walking in Mount Road, next to Barnes Infants School, in the early hours of Sunday when she was approached by a man on a bike.

After trying to talk to the woman, who ignored him, he grabbed her bag before fleeing.

The attacker was white, about 5ft 6in tall and in his late teens. He was slim with ginger or blonde hair, had pale skin and spoke with a Sunderland accent. He wore a brown coat and rode a black and yellow bike.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Flaxen said: “I’d appeal for anyone with any information into this robbery to contact us.

“The stolen handbag was found nearby to the scene and inquiries are under way to trace the man responsible.

“We’ve had a number of reports of handbag snatches in the Sunderland area over the last few months and I’d ask that women make sure their bags are as safe as possible at all times.

“We’ve had a few of calls reporting attempted handbag snatches recently and I’d ask that people report suspicious behaviour to police as soon as possible and we can check it out.”

Anyone with information on the incident, which happened at about 1.30am on Sunday, should contact police on 101 ext 69191.
