A MAN seen performing a sex act on himself in a back lane has been given a curfew to ensure he stays indoors overnight.

Mark Adams, also known as Marcus Crennell, admitted outraging public decency when he appeared before Sunderland magistrates in September, but the case was adjourned for probation reports.

The 42-year-old was arrested after a couple living in Carley Road, Southwick, looked out their bedroom window at 11.20pm on September 8 to see Adams perform the sex act.

Adams has now been told he must stay indoors at his home in nearby Gordon Terrace as part of a tagged curfew between 8pm and 6am.

His 12-month community order will also include supervision by the Probation Service and he was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

At an earlier hearing the court was told he had a record of similar matters dating back almost 20 years and that he had been an inpatient at various mental health hospitals over they years.

Chris Wilson, mitigating, said at the earlier hearing: “Before you today is a complex young man, who has had a number of mental health issues for a significant period of time.

“On the part of Mr Adams there is some dispute regarding the act he was performing. He was standing in the back lane and the residents got out of bed and looked out the window and saw him.”

Mr Wilson added: “He’s ashamed and embarrassed because he had put behaviour of this nature behind him. He is at a loss as to why he behaved in this way.”
