RESIDENTS can keep bike thieves locked out.

Washington Neighbourhood Policing Team is holding a crime prevention event at the skate park, near The Galleries shopping centre, on Sunday.

Officers will be on hand to give out free bike locks and crime prevention advice, between 10am and 2pm.

It also gives residents a chance to meet their beat bobbies and find out more about what they are doing to tackle crime in the area.

Pc Gordon Bellamy said: “During the summer months as more and more people are out and about on bikes we see the number reported lost or stolen increase.

“We always advise people to make sure they lock their bike to something secure with a good quality lock to make it difficult for any thieves to steal it.

“We have a limited number of bike locks that we’ll be giving away to residents in Washington, and would urge people to come along on Sunday.”
