Couple injured in Washington attack

A COUPLE were assaulted after a night out.

The incident happened in Washington, at 3.30am on New Year’s Day.

A 24-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were walking along a cycle track from Biddick towards Rickleton, behind the Makro Industrial Estate, when they were assaulted by an unknown man and woman who approached them.

The victims sustained head and facial injuries and were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The woman was released after treatment.

The man, who suffered a broken jaw, was transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment.

Anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact investigating officers.
