PRISON bosses have raised concerns about a Sunderland sex fiend’s close relationship with serial killer Rose West.

Staff in HMP Low Newton became so concerned about Linda Jeffrey’s growing “friendship” with the mass murderer they compiled a report to prison authorities, a court was told.

Jeffrey was jailed for six years last year after being found guilty of aiding and abetting an indecent assault and eight child cruelty charges.

The 62-year-old knew her husband Andrew, now dead, was responsible for a series of sickening sex attacks on children in the 1970s and 80s, but did nothing to stop him and made no attempt to report what she knew.

The revelations came to light after Jeffrey was called to give evidence in the ongoing murder trial of Sharon Swinhoe, accused of killing Peter MacMahon.

Called to appear at Newcastle Crown Court against Swinhoe regarding a prison conversation the pair are alleged to have had, Jeffrey was then quizzed on her relationship with West.

Joanna Greenberg QC asked Jeffrey: “Your new best friend is Rose West, is it not?”

Jeffrey replied: “No, she cleans the floor outside, she speaks to me, she speaks to everyone in there.”

Miss Greenberg said: “The prison service are concerned and made a report about your new friendship with Rose West?”

Jeffrey said: “I don’t know.”

Miss Greenberg said: “May I suggest you have something in common, given your ill treatment of children?”

Jeffrey replied: “No.”

She appeared at court in her wheelchair and refused to answer any questions about her own case. She said: “I’m not here to be ripped to bits, I didn’t want to get involved in this bloody big mess. You are not asking me any questions about me. I am refusing point blank to answer any questions about me.

“I still say I am not guilty. My husband died through it. I’m not listening to it any more.”

Jeffrey and her husband, formerly of Cuillin Close, Lambton, Washington, denied any wrongdoing throughout their trial last year, but were found guilty of a series of charges by a jury.

Andrew Jeffrey was convicted of 11 indecent assaults and two of cruelty, and jailed for a total of eight years.

West was convicted of 10 murders in 1995. Her husband Fred, who committed suicide in prison while awaiting trial, is believed to have collaborated with her in the torture and murder of at least 10 young women.

Fred West is known to have carried out 12 murders in total.
