Church 'ransacked' by criminals in heartbreaking burglary

A Washington church has been “ransacked” by thieves in a heartbreaking attack.

Northumbria Police officers received reports of a break-in at Saint Andrew’s Methodist Church in Washington on Monday, January 27.

During the incident, the criminals stole items donated to the church to support a local foodbank and “ransacked” cabinets on the premises.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman confirmed details of the incident to the Echo – and added that the force’s inquiries into the crime were ongoing as the search for witnesses continued.

Anyone with information about what happened has also been urged to get in touch.

She said in a statement: “Yesterday (Monday, January 27) we received a report of a theft from Saint Andrew’s Methodist Church, Vermont, Albany, Washington.

“Food from the food bank was taken and cabinets were ransacked.

"Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting 210 270120 or can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
