An investigation has been launched into the incidents, which officers believe to be linked, and police have now identified a man they would like to trace.

PC Peter Baker, of Northumbria Police, said: “We have been carrying out a number of enquiries into the reported thefts, and after tracking CCTV footage, we have now identified a man who we would like to speak to in connection with the incidents.

“We are now asking the public to come forward if they identify the man in question and assist us with our enquiries.

“Shoplifting is increasingly being dealt with by security at shops themselves, but we are committed to taking robust action against those who persistently re-offend and show a total disregard to those who live and work in the city.”

Anyone who recognises the man is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 001080V/20 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Alternatively, you can email [email protected]
