POLICE have released CCTV images of two men they are keen to speak to about an assault in the early hours of New Years Day.

Members of the public reported a man lying unconscious on the ground close to the Murco petrol station in Pallion New Road just after 2am.

Officers and paramedics found the 25-year-old man victim at a nearby address.

It is believed he had been involved in an altercation with a group of four men during which he was assaulted and suffered a significant head injury.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the RVI in Newcastle where he remains in a serious condition.

Another man who was with him was also assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Now CCTV images have been released of two men who were in the area of the garage at the time of the assault and may have information.
