AN award-winning photographer has spoken of her shock after her studio was targeted by burglars.

Cameras, lens, lights and stands were stolen alongside tools in a raid on Maverickart, in Bonner’s Field, St Peter’s, Sunderland.

Jo Howell, who has won a string of art and business awards, runs the studio, which works with charities and community groups.

“As a group of hard-working artists, who do a lot of community-based work, we were very shocked and upset at the theft of our hard-earned equipment,” she said.

The photography, video and digital imaging graduate, who studied at the University of Sunderland, said: “We hope the thief has a pang of conscience and returns the goods as they probably won’t receive a lot on the black market for the items, but it will take us quite some time to organise the funds to replace what was taken.

“It will cost us about £4,000 to replace the items with new or similar ones.” The break-in happened between 4pm on Thursday, August 1, and 9.30am the following day.

“We think they have used a crowbar or something similar to prise the metal fire escape door off the back of the unit,” added Jo.

Police are appealing for information and can be called on 101 or Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
