A BURGLAR was locked up over Christmas after a judge ruled he was too intoxicated to understand what was being said in court.

Keith Edgar, 38, of Gairloch Drive, Chester-le-Street, was due to be sentenced for a burglary at Durham Crown Court.

But when the 38-year-old was put in the dock on Christmas Eve, he appeared unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.

Judge Christopher Prince decided against sentencing the defendant while he was intoxicated.

He said: “This defendant is clearly not properly aware of these proceedings. It appears he may be detoxing from drugs.

“I am not prepared to sentence someone who cannot understand what is being said.”

Judge Prince remanded Edgar in custody until January 7.
