AS Michael Atherton Snr launched his attack in Greenside Avenue, Horden, Susan’s 19-year-old daughter Laura McGoldrick, from a different relationship, fled through an upstairs window and raised the alarm.

She ran into the street and pounded on a neighbour’s front door asking for help.

She was taken to hospital with injuries and was later released. It is believed shotgun pellets were left in her wrist and shoulder during the incident.

It’s thought that two other people at the house managed to escape Atherton, who was thought to be a rabbit hunter.

Other people were in the house as officers arrived on the scene. They are being interviewed today.

Atherton’s victims are thought to be popular members of the community.
