Bookies robbed by man in combat gear

A member of staff at a Sunderland bookmakers shop was threatened with a knife.

The masked robber, who was dressed in full combat clothing, entered the William Hill shop in Tower Street, Hendon at 8.30pm last night.

A lone member of staff was threatened with the knife and handed over a small amount of cash.

The shopworker was shaken by the ordeal, but otherwise unhurt.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the robbery in Sunderland.

Det Sgt Andy Richardson of Northumbria Police, said: “We’re doing everything possible to trace the man involved, who was wearing a distinctive camouflage jacket and trousers.

“Someone will know who this man is or will have seen him in the area either before or after the robbery took place. I’d ask any witnesses or anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible.”
