BOGUS gardeners have been conning Wearsiders out of their cash.
On Tuesday, a man called at a house in Thackeray Road, Thorney Close, and demanded money from an elderly resident for gardening work he had not done.
Last week, a pensioner was conned out of cash in Usworth, in a similar incident that saw a man take money for gardening work never carried out.
Officers are investigating the thefts and are urging Wearsiders to check out the identity of people who call at their doors.
Sunderland West Neighbourhood Inspector Cheryl Warcup said: “Anyone who is visited by these con men should contact police immediately and under no circumstances hand over any cash.
“Bogus callers prey on elderly residents and we’d urge people to be extra cautious to anyone who knocks on the door unannounced.”
