Detectives are investigating an “unexplained” death after a body was discovered near a city running track.

The man’s body was found by a cyclist just before 8am today opposite the Maiden Castle running track in Durham City.

Durham Police say the man’s death is currently unexplained and CSI officers are at the scene, which has been sealed off.

Officers are keen to trace anyone who may have seen the man, whose identity is not yet being revealed, prior to 8am.

His car, a black Landrover Discovery, has been recovered by officers from where it was parked at Old Elvet in the city.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Chapman, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are keen to build up a picture of his movements prior to his death.

“We would like to know why he was in the area and if he was alone. He was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms, trainers and a black running top.

“Maiden Castle is popular with runners, walkers and cyclists and would have been busy earlier this morning.”

Anyone who thinks they may have seen someone who fits this description between Old Elvet and Maiden Castle between 7am-8am this morning should call the police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
