A BATTERED wife has been jailed for five years after stabbing her husband to death in Spain.
Michelle Cornell, 50, is starting her stretch behind bars after being convicted of murdering her husband at a Malaga court, in Spain’s Costa del Sol yesterday.
The court heard how Cornell, who moved to the popular southern coast with husband David in 2009, plunged a kitchen knife into his chest at their home in July 2010.
The fatal attack followed years of abuse at the hands of her husband, 57, during their 18-year marriage, the court was told.
The court heard that Cornell had failed to report the abuse to either British or Spanish police and had not sought a separation or divorce.
Former Sunderland car salesman Mr Cornell’s body was found in the passageway of the couple’s apartment at the resort of Benalmadena, near Torremolinos.
An inquest reveal Mr Cornell, an ex-guitarist with rock band Barkin’ Billy and the Scrapyard Dogs, died as a result of the stab wound.
The kitchen knife severed a main artery and Spanish experts believe he bled to death within minutes.
In a statement to police, Cornell said she had rowed with her husband on the night of the attack after telling him she wanted a divorce.
She claimed he became violent and tried to strangle her after he pulled off her wedding ring and threw it on the floor.
She grabbed the kitchen knife and stabbed him in defence.
Both her and her husband had been drinking heavily.
Presiding judge Maria de los angeles Serrano said the five-year prison sentence took into account the abuse Cornell suffered.
The couple, who were born and raised in Sunderland and lived for many years in Front Street, Pity Me, Durham, had decided to sell up in Spain and move back to the UK.
