Bangladeshi community pays tribute to Sunderland dad found shot dead outside takeaway

TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a popular dad who died after being found with a gunshot wound outside a takeaway.

Tipu Sultan, 32, died after a shooting incident to the rear of Herbs n Spice Kitchen takeaway in Lake Avenue, South Shields, at 9.58pm last night.

Paramedics and police attended and he received treatment, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dad-of-two, from Sunderland, is believed to be the owner of the takeaway. Police have launched a murder investigation.

Sayed Ahmed, a childhood friend of Tipu, said: “He was top bloke, always had smile on his face, an avid Sunderland supporter.

“He was a regular at the Stadium of Light with his ten year old son.

“He will be missed sorely around these parts and my condolences go out to his wife, children and family.”

Shah Lalon Amin, secretary of the Bangladeshi Caterers Federation in South Shields, said: “I knew Tipu and his family and friends.

“The business community in South Shields is alarmed and it’s fair to say the Bangladeshi community in Sunderland are in shock.

“The Federation which represents Herbs and Spices sends their condolences.”

Neighbours in the Lake Avenue area have spoken of their shock and sadness after the killing.

Victoria Chisholm, 37, the landlady of the nearby Lake pub said: “I’d just seen him at 6.30pm. He asked ‘what was the score again?’ having a joke about the match.

“I just can’t believe this has happened.”

Ann Wikinson, 57, a former landlady of the Lake, said: “He was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He wouldn’t harm a fly.

“He’s such a nice person. I’ve known him for years because I used to run the pub.

“Everyone is just shocked and gutted. He’s going to be a big miss in the community. I just can’t believe it’s him, I really can’t.”

Northumbria Police said inquiries are ongoing and extra officers are in the area to provide reassurance to the public.

Officers confirmed they are treating it as a murder investigation.
