AN aspiring hairdresser stole cosmetics worth more than £65.

Demi-Leigh Young also helped herself to a leopard print bodywarmer while in Sunderland city centre last month, the city’s magistrates court heard.

The bench was told the 18-year-old, from Hendon in Sunderland, walked out of Store Twenty One in Blandford Street with the body warmer over her arm, then into The Bridges and helped herself to make-up from beauty store Body Care.

Joseph Wynn, prosecuting, said Young, of Hendon Valley Road, who is unemployed and not on benefits, was caught before she left the shopping centre.

“She said she had no idea what she was going to do with the products from the Body Care store,” he said.

“It appears to be the first time she has been before the courts, as there are no convictions recorded against her.

“There was a recent caution, in August, for shop theft.”

Heather Bolton, defending, said had been on a course at BL Hairdressing College in Sunderland, but had to leave, as she could not find a work placement. She lived with her sister, as her mother had died, she added.

“This had a big effect on her,” Mrs Bolton said, “and she has been struggling and is suffering from depression.”

Mrs Bolton added Young had been walking around the city centre in “a bit of a daze” on September 12 when the thefts were committed. Magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
