Arson investigation launched after another early-morning van fire in Ryhope

Police officers have launched an arson inquiry after emergency services were called to a van fire in a Ryhope street for the second time this week.

The incident took place on Wednesday, September 2 at around 4.30am when two fire crews from Sunderland Central attended Dinsdale Street in Ryhope after receiving reports that a Ford Transit van on fire.

Officers investigating the blaze have confirmed that they are treating it as arson and are asking anyone who may have information relating to the incident to get in touch.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 4.45am on September 2, we received a report from the fire service of a vehicle on fire on Dinsdale Street in Ryhope.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing and anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 111 020920.”

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) added: “There was a vehicle fire on Dinsdale Street on Wednesday morning, at 4.28. Two crews from Sunderland Central attended. The fire was extinguished and crews left at 05.05.”

This is the second incident in a matter of days relating to an arson attack on vans in Ryhope.

It is understood that no one has been injured in either incident.
