Arrest after street attack in Sunderland city centre

A MAN has been arrested following an assault in a Sunderland street.

At just after 8.20pm on Friday, police received a report from the ambulance service of a man having been assaulted on Foyle Street in Sunderland city centre.

Officers attended the scene and found a 34-year-old man suffering from head injuries.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment, where he remained yesterday.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He has been bailed as the investigation continues.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses to the assault as there were believed to be people in the area at the time.
