Arrest after police chase involving stolen car on the A690

A man is being questioned by police after a pursuit on the A690 when a suspected stolen car failed to stop.

The 20-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle following a report a Nissan Qashqai had been taken from outside a home in Easington Village in the hours before the pursuit in the early hours of today, Tuesday, August 4.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3.15am today, officers spotted a suspected stolen vehicle travelling on the A690 towards Hetton.

“Officers pursued the vehicle in question, but the occupant failed to pull over when instructed and instead pressed down the accelerator in a bid to get away from police.

“Those inside the vehicle later fled on foot into an estate – where police located and arrested a 20-year-old male suspect on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

"He remains in custody and is assisting officers with their ongoing inquiries.”
