POLICE are hunting armed thieves who raided two occupied flats in Sunderland.

Three men armed with a hammer and a knife forced their way into an apartment in Claremont Terrace just before 5am this morning.

They searched the flat, which had a woman and two men inside, and left with cash and personal property.

The three offenders had their faces covered and wore gloves. Although the occupants were threatened and were left shaken, no-one was injured.

The suspects left and then went into another flat in the building and stole items from inside, again the occupant, a man, wasn’t injured.

Detective Sergeant Simon Auty said: “We’re appealing for any witnesses who saw the three men in the area of Claremont Terrace in the early hours to get in touch as soon as possible.

“Enquiries are in their early stages and are ongoing to establish exactly what happened.

“Thankfully no-one was injured in this incident, although they were left shaken, and extra patrols are taking place in the area to reassure residents as well as gather information.”
