“We booked up about two months ago,” said entrepreneur Les, 31.

“Then my girlfriend’s sister wanted to go away to France for her birthday so we recommended the firm.

“Then, the day before they were due to fly, they found they had no holiday.

“I’m lucky that I can afford to book another holiday, but some people have saved up for years,” said Les, who runs a security firm and a gym in Sunderland.

Lee Axon, pictured, of Eden Vale, Sunderland, had booked to stay in a five-star hotel in Dalaman in Turkey last September and missed out.

Lee, 40, said: “I was left really disappointed.”
