A MAN and woman accused of being cruel to animals will stand trial.

Former couple Thomas Burns, 37, and Stacey Robinson, 34, are alleged to have mistreated a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a guinea pig.

They both pleaded not guilty to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act when they appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

It is said they failed to treat an ear infection the dog had and didn’t provide water for the guinea pig.

The RSPCA say the alleged offences happened between August and September last year, when they were living together in Ancona Street, Sunderland.

Burns, now of Aldwick Road, Newcastle, and Robinson, who refused to give her full address in court, but lives in North Tyneside, will stand trial on June 27.
