William Ireland and Dionne Lightfoot's late night, rail-side display was seen by a shocked CCTV operator and reported to the police.

It was claimed Lightfoot was performing a sexual act on Ireland when they were spotted at Wallsend Metro Station in North Tyneside on June 9 this year.

The ordinarily busy town centre station was quiet at the time of the incident.

The pair faced a trial for outraging public decency but their case was at Newcastle Crown Court today, where the charge against both of them was dropped.

Prosecutor Emma Dowling said: "I can confirm they have both now been cautioned for that offence."

Ireland, 29, of Caris Street, Gateshead and Lightfoot, 22, of Walkerdene House, Walker, were not at court but had appeared together in the dock at previous crown court and magistrates' hearings.

Rachel Hedworth, defending, told the court: "Both defendants have admitted guilt but in a different way."

Mrs Justice Whipple ordered that the indictment containing the outraging public decency charge should be stayed, which means the case will no longer be pursued.

The pair had been on bail for the alleged offence.
