A WOMAN is flying high to qualify as an RAF officer.

Catherine Robinson, from Chester-le-Street, graduated as a Flying Officer from No 26 Initial Officer Training Course at the Officer and Aircrew Cadet Training Unit, at RAF College Cranwell, in Lincolnshire.

The 22-year-old joined 30 fellow cadets outside the College Hall to parade in front of Air Vice-Marshall Matt Wiles, Chief of Staff Personnel and Air Secretary.

Ms Robinson, whose parents David and Elaine live in Chester-le-Street, will soon begin phase two of her training as an air traffic controller at RAF Shawbury, in Shropshire.

The new officer is not the only member of her family to serve in the military.

Her brother John is due to commission as an officer in the Royal Navy, from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
