Councillor declared bankrupt

AN outspoken councillor has been declared bankrupt.

Boldon councillor David Potts was issued with a bankruptcy order at Sunderland County Court last week, according to the London Gazette website.

The bankruptcy order is not though to affect the Independent councillor’s position at South Tyneside Council.

A spokesman for the authority said: “The order that has currently been made does not affect David Potts’ position as a councillor. As part of proceedings regarding the leak of confidential data that the council was forced to institute earlier this year, Councillor Potts was ordered to pay £5,428 in costs to the council. This amount is being recovered from his allowances.”

Coun Potts is set to represent UKIP in the elections for Northumbria Police Crime Commissioner, despite having previously promised to stand down as a councillor after a battle with alcohol.

He has represented the Cleadon and East Boldon ward since 2004.

The former Tory group leader hit the headlines with his controversial comments, including allegedly tweeting former American porn star Mercedes Ashley requesting a congratulatory message to his fellow ward councillor Jeff Milburn for being re-elected in May.

A constituent was also angered at being invited to a possible wives and swingers party by Coun Potts, who also likened the event to a “bunga bunga” gathering, an Italian word for an orgy.
