Council wins £260,000 funding boost to tackle potholes

Pothole problems are set to be tackled head-on after Sunderland City Council bosses were given enough cash to fill in almost 5,000.

The authority has been awarded £260,000 – enough to tackle 4,900 potholes at an average of £53 a time – as part of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.

The statement speech was made in the House of Commons last week, but full details of where cash has been allocated has just emerged.

Coun Michael Mordey, the council’s Portfolio Holder for City Services, welcomed the announcement, but said it would not make up for previous shortfalls in funding.

“Naturally, the extra pothole funding is very welcome and the council has received similar grant funding in the past,” he said.

“In the last 12 months more than 5,000 potholes have been repaired.

“These grants, however, are not a substitute for the pressure that highways budgets have been under because of Government austerity programmes.”
