Council in Twitter bid

TWITTER has released information after South Tyneside Council went to a U.S. court in a bid to identify a user behind allegedly libellous statements.

The authority went to court in California after three councillors and an official complained they were libelled in a blog called “Mr Monkey”.

The blog has made a number of accusations against Coun David Potts, the former Conservative leader and now independent councillor for Cleadon and East Boldon and the council’s Labour leader Iain Malcolm.

Coun Potts said: “We are public figures and we expect to take flak. But this isn’t flak, it’s a hate campaign.”

A spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: “The council has a duty of care to protect its employees and as this blog contains damaging claims about council officers, legal action is being taken to identify those responsible.”
