COUNCIL bosses say its winter maintenance service will not be hit by job losses from its highways team.

Durham County Council plans to axe 40 jobs from its highways operations department over the next 12 months.

This is despite residents of County Durham saying in a major public consultation exercise that highways and maintenance budgets should be protected from Government spending cuts above all other services.

John Reed, the council’s head of technical services, said: “One thing that I would like to make absolutely clear is that these job losses will not impact on the council’s winter maintenance service, which has already been planned, agreed and budgeted for.

“These will be implemented regardless of any highways changes.”
