Could you be Alice in Sunderland?

The search is on to find the lucky girl to feature in a host of events in the city next month, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the children’s classic tale Alice in Wonderland.

A full programme of fun-filled activities has been created by Sunderland’s Business Improvement District for every weekend throughout August – and a search has been launched to find someone to play Alice.

Gemma Dishman, marketing and communications manager of Sunderland Business Improvement District (BID), said that anyone who applies “doesn’t necessarily need to look like Alice”.

“This is more about finding someone from the city who can completely embrace the events and play an active part in them,” she added.

The events begin on August 8 and 9, where a giant maze will appear in Keel Square, presided over by a Philosophical Caterpillar, which will ask passers-by to help solve a riddle.

The following weekend has been named Eat Me Drink Me, with walking and talking Mad Hatter tables, food workshops with the Queen of Hearts and food-tasting opportunities at Arizona in Park Lane Village.

On August 22 and 23 a giant throne will be in the Market Square, where visitors will get the opportunity to have their photos taken with Alice and the White Rabbit. The final weekend – August 29 and 30 – will see a giant Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in Sunniside.

Anyone wanting to apply to be Alice must be available throughout August to attend at least one day each weekend, and needs to post a video as to why they are perfect for the role – no longer than one minute 30 seconds – on the BID’s Facebook Experience It Here page by Sunday.

Applicants must be aged between five and 15 and will need an adult to accompany them to all events.
