FLOWERS, cards, letters and teddies are still being left at the scene in Ryhope where 12-year-old Matthew Hayes lost his life on Friday.

As fellow pupils from Venerable Bede Academy left school yesterday, many made their way along Ryhope Road South where Matthew was hit by a bus, leaving their own tributes.

“Taken from us way too soon. Sleep tight, sunshine,” one card read. Blaine Johnson wrote: “My thoughts are with you and your family. I only knew you for one year but you were a good friend.”

“Today has been a really difficult day,” headteacher Gill Booth said. “We remembered and prayed for Matthew and his family, made cards and lit candles in his memory.”

A spokesman from bus firm Go Northeast said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who died as a result of this tragic accident. A full investigation is under way.”
