EMPIRE Theatre-goers were evacuated this evening after a cigarette triggered a smoke alarm.

A crew from Sunderland Central fire station was called to the theatre after the alarm was activated by a cigarette which had been used during the production of Jersey Boys and not properly extinguished.

No-one was hurt and the audience was allowed back into the theatre after around 20 minutes.
