A STAINED-glass window has been dedicated in memory of a congregation member.
Lily Burton was organist at St Mary Magdalene’s church in Trimdon, County Durham, where she worshipped for 50 years.
Following her death from cancer in November 2011, an appeal was launched for a memorial window to remember the 71-year-old.
Her husband John was the constituency agent of then Sedgefield MP Tony Blair, and the former PM was among those who backed the appeal, describing her as “one of the kindest and nicest human beings he had ever met.”
Mr Blair and wife Cherie offered to double the total amount raised for the window.
On Saturday, Cherie attended the dedication of the window, which is based on Magnificat – the song of Mary – an ancient hymn that celebrates the Virgin Mary.
John said: “Lily was a great servant to the church. She just loved the church.”
