A city church is gearing up to stage a host of events to mark a milestone.

Next month, St Ignatius Church in Hendon will turn 125.

A series of events will begin with an exhibition of postcard-sized pieces of art, submitted by Sunderland residents.

The exhibition will run at the church, on the junction of Mowbray Road, Bramwell Road and Suffolk Street, from Thursday until July 10.

On July 2, Right Reverend Paul Butler, the Lord Bishop of Durham, will lead a solemn dedication and festival mass from 7.30pm.

Other events taking place include a summer concert on July 4 at 5.45pm.

St Andrew’s Operatic Society will perform a selection of light and popular music at the church.

Tickets for the concert are £6.50 and include refreshments.

They are available from any society member or on the door.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards the upkeep of the church including the restoration of the window on the west facade.

The culmination of the celebrations will take place on July 10 with a community festival.

Everyone is invited to come along from 5.45pm to celebrate the church’s birthday.
