SUNDERLAND fans have been giving their reaction to the Darren Bent affair...

Gary Bartoszewski, 43, Sunderland, said: “I’m gutted. He’s been our best striker since Kevin Phillips, but with £18million it’s hard to knock back. ”

Chris Carney (pictured), 20, Fulwell, said: “We can use the money to find someone to replace him. He’s always called this place home and then he goes and does something like that.”

Alec Murray, 19, Roker, said: “It’s cheeky of him handing in a transfer request, especially after Sunday’s performance.”

Dave Macleod, 40, Hylton Lane, said: “I’m a bit shocked by it. I didn’t think his body language suggested that he wanted to leave and I always thought he had put his heart into it, but you never know what goes on behind closed doors.”

Liam McManus, 20, Seaburn, looked at the positives: “I’d take £18million for him. I am disappointed because he is a proven goalscorer at this level but if he wants to go, let him go. We could use the money to try and sign Danny Welbeck on a permenent deal because he’s younger and has a longer future.”

Paul Sawyer, 44, Sunderland, said: “I would be devastated if he went because he’s done so much for this club. It would be a shame but for £18million and as long as Steve Bruce spends the money wisely, which I think he will, then why not?”

Liam Robson, Sunderland, 21, stated: “It is a bit of a shock but he hasn’t played well for the past six or seven games. The question is, who is going to replace him?”

Jack White, 18, said: “He obviously feels he has been mistreated since Gyan arrived at the club and he feels hard done by. Gyan just comes in as the club’s record transfer and Bent feels like he doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s getting at the moment.”

Meghan Ewart, 20,, said: “I think he should go. He’s had no success for England since he’s been at the club and if he stays at Sunderland he won’t get anywhere in his international career.”

Connor Stanhope, 18, said: “Bent is my favourite player by far, but he must be unhappy with the club since Gyan arrived and it is unfair at how he has been treated since Gyan came to the club. He’s not playing as much as he usually would, so maybe that’s why he wants to go to Villa.”
