Checkatrade Trophy: Sunderland's potential opponents plus details of dates, prize money and a potential Newcastle clash
Sunderland have progressed to the last sixteen of the Checkatrade Trophy, but who could they face next?
The Black Cats successfully navigated a group containing Stoke City U21s, Carlisle United and Morecambe before then dispatching Notts County in the first knockout round.
And that means Jack Ross' side are now potentially just three games away from a date at Wembley.
But who could be standing in their way in the next round?
Sunderland could draw any one of the seven other teams remaining in the Northern section of the competition as, unlike in the previous knockout round, there is no seeding at this stage.
One potential opponent is Newcastle United's U21s, after they beat Macclesfield Town on penalties in the next round.
The last sixteen remains regionalised, although this is the final round where the tournament remains as such with the eight remaining sides after this stage entered into an open draw.
That means from the quarter finals onward, Sunderland could be paired with a team from the Southern half of the draw.
However, there are just seven teams that Sunderland could play in the last sixteen: Newcastle United U21s, Rochdale or Oldham Athletic, Shrewsbury Town or Walsall, Manchester City U21s, Accrington Stanley, Bury or Port Vale.
A date for the next round draw is still to be confirmed, but last sixteen ties will be played on the week commencing January 7.
Sunderland have already scooped £65,000 prize money from the competition, and could be in line for another £40,000 payout if they can navigate their way through the next round as well.
