RUNNERS can seal a place for this year’s festival of running on Wearside – and help worthy charities in the process.
The organisers of the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K, now in its fifth year, have today revealed details of a range of special packages designed to help charities focus on the races as fundraising opportunities.
we are really keen to see loads of other local charities benefit from this big event on their doorstep.
The packages include special discounts on places for runners and display space at the start/finish area.
Both events take place on Sunday, May 3, starting and finishing at the Stadium of Light.
For many big city running events, charities have to pay a premium for the places that they distribute to their supporters.
This year, the festival is taking a different approach and is offering charities the option of taking gold, silver or bronze packages, all of which incorporate free and discounted places, plus additional benefits.
Festival organiser and former Olympic athlete Steve Cram said: “Along with our official charity COCO, we are really keen to see loads of other local charities benefit from this big event on their doorstep. “Their fund-raisers account for a good proportion of our runners and their supporters help line the route and cheer people on, so with our partners at Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Live we’re delighted to be able to offer these special packages to those charities who want to get involved in our events.”
One charity that has already taken advantage of the gold package is St. Benedict’s Hospice, in Ryhope.
The organisation’s fund-raising manager Catrina Flynn said: “We are proud to be involved in the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K as one of the charity partners.
“St Benedict’s is a Sunderland charity supporting the people of this city and the surrounding area and it is important for us to play a role in events like this that bring in visitors.
“We are also keen to get our supporters involved in projects for which they don’t have to travel too far.
“The Run Sunderland charity packages are available at a price that makes it possible for us to open up the races to potential runners who may not be able to commit to the large sponsorship requirements that other similar events require.”
Organisers of the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K are expecting around 4,000 people to take part in the events.
