The daring fundraiser has tackled a string of marathons and Great North Runs to raise precious pounds for charity in recent years - and is now slipping on his running shoes and strapping on his 42kg fridge to boost the fight against cancer in his biggest test yet.

Back in 2012, he hit the finishing line on 30 Great North Run’s in as many days - but is now setting his sights much higher.

He is more than a third of the way through his inspiring bid to run the familiar route - from Newcastle to South Shields - each day for a gruelling total of 100 days.

His ambitious bid is raising much-needed cash for Saras Hope Foundation, a charity set up in 2007 in honour of Sara Hoburn, who tragically lost her own two-year fight with the disease at the tender age of 16 in 2001.

The charity supports cancer survivors and their families in a range of ways by offering holiday retreats to provide a vital respite from the strains and struggles of tackling the disease.

Mr Phoenix-Morrison was joined on the 34th leg of his adventure today by Wearside fitness trainer and former BBC Apprentice star Katie Bulmer-Cooke.

She was delighted to be running mate and get on the fundraising trail.

She took to Twitter after over 13 miles of pounding pavements to say; “What a brill experience running with Tony the fridge on day 34 of his 100 Great North Run’s in 100 days. legend.”

The fighting-fit 51-year-old is determined to take on every last step in tribute to those facing their own daily battle to overcome cancer.

Mr Phoenix-Morrison said in his mission statement on his fundraising page that he was eager to go the last mile to support lives touched by cancer.

He said: “As a veteran campaigner and fundraiser for Cancer charities I have met so many cancer sufferers over the years.

"I have made so many friends and met too many people that are sadly no longer here.

“These people are the reason I keep doing what I do.

"If I have learned one thing from all the people I have met, it is that tough times bring the best out of all of us. I have met and got to know so many brave souls and it is these people that inspire me to keep going.

"I will attempt a journey of 1320 miles carrying on my back best part of 7 stone my trusty 42kg Smeg Fridge.

“The journey represents the seeming impossible journey cancer sufferers face on the road to recovery.”

“I will run as near as possible the exact Great North Run route every day until the official Great North Run on September 11.”
