Celtic chief Lee Congerton has dig at Sunderland - saying he'd have been better taking job in Ukrainian civil war!

Congerton was director of football at the Stadium of Light for two years until resigning at the same time as manager Dick Advocaat.

And he said that while he had a lot of time for the people at the club he joined after spells at Hamburg and Chelsea, he almost wished he hadn't taken the job.

Congerton's tenure saw him work alongside managers Gus Poyet and Advocaat, with limited success in the transfer market.

He said: “I actually signed a contract with Metallist Kharkiv in Ukraine after leaving Hamburg to go and work with Frank Arnesen again but the civil war started.

“Maybe I would have been better going into the civil war than going to Sunderland!

“It’s a marvellous club and I enjoyed working there with some wonderful people but they were bottom of the league when I arrived and we twice managed to stay up.”
