Police are appealing for help after a man was attacked on a train after he challenged two other passengers over remarks they made to his girlfriend.

The 46-year-old victim was punched and grabbed around the throat as the train pulled into Durham at around 9.40pm on Saturday, January 2.

British Transport Police said a group of drunken men boarded the train at Newcastle. As the train pulled into Durham, two of the them approached a girl who was stood by the train doors waiting to leave with her boyfriend and begin to talk to her.

Her boyfriend then challenged the men about comments they made towards his girlfriend and was punched in the face by one of them men while the other grabbed him around the throat.

PC Gavin Alcorn, from British Transport Polic,e said: "The victim’s girlfriend and another passenger on the train attempted to intervene in the attack but were pushed away.

"When the doors opened the two men pushed the victim and his girlfriend off the train and onto the platform. The victim suffered bruising under his eye and a sore throat as a result of the incident.

"Nobody should be subjected to abusive behaviour and violence on the rail network and we are determined to find those responsible.

"Our enquiries so far have identified CCTV images of two men who we believe may have more information about what happened. I’d urge anyone who knows them to get in touch."
