POLICE are warning of delays as thousands of Carlise fans head to Sunderland for Sunday’s cup clash.

The Black Cats take on Carlisle FC in the FA Cup third round tie at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Carlisle fans are being encouraged to travel to Sunderland on organised coaches. These will leave Carlisle at around 10am.

The coaches will travel along the A69 to the stadium and police are advising motorists there may be delays.

Police say kick-off for the match is 2pm and it’s anticipated there will be heavy traffic on the route from Carlisle – the A69/A1/A1231/A1290 – between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

The return journey is expected to be from 4pm onwards.

Northumbria Police Temporary Chief Superintendent Andy McDyer said: “It’s anticipated there will be around 70 coaches travelling along the route which may cause some delays.

“We want to give motorists advance warning that there will be additional traffic on the roads so they can plan their journey accordingly and if necessary find an alternative route.

“Police will be working to keep any congestion to an absolute minimum and we would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience.”
