Caring nursery children donate to Houghton foodbank

The nursery has made a donation to Loaves and Fishes foodbank.

Staff and children at Hetton-Le-Hole Nursery, in Victoria Street, teamed up to donate valuable food items to the Loaves and Fishes foodbank on Easington Lane, which is used by some parents at the school.

Headteacher Ruth Williamson and room leader Amy Brennan, accompanied by some of the nursery children, dropped off the food.

Mrs Williamson said the school wanted to give something back to the community through the collection.

She said: “We started collecting donations on April 20. It is a worthwhile cause and we know that some of the parents have used this facility before, so we wanted to give something back.”

The foodbank is based at The Flatts Youth Centre is open from 11am to noon on Monday each week.

It was set up to help people from the local community who may be affected by issues such as benefit delays and sanctions.

The project, which provides food parcels and support when required, is run by a team of volunteers who are members of Christian churches in the Hetton area.
