Care home rapped for failing to protect residents

A CARE home has been told it has failed to protect the safety and welfare of its residents.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has issued a formal warning to Bondcare Shaftesbury, registered provider of Washington’s Donwell House, to make urgent improvements to standards of medicines management or face further action.

It follows an unannounced visit by inspectors to Wellgarth Road home, to follow up requirements made during a previous inspection.

The home provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 63 people, some of who have dementia.

On the latest inspection, it was found that Donwell House was still failing to meet national standards covering the management of medicines.

Inspectors found a number of medication admin records were incomplete or unclear, and it was not possible to know if people had received their medication at the right time or as prescribed.

The CQC said there were inconsistencies between the amount of medication recorded as being received in stock, and the amount recorded as having been administered to people living in the home.

Records had been signed by staff to indicate that medication had been administered when this was not the case, and medication stocks were not always being replenished in time to ensure a continued supply was available.

Malcolm Bower-Brown, CQC’s director in the North, said: “The law sets out national standards that everyone who uses services should be able to expect.

“Providers have a duty to ensure they meet these standards.

“This warning sends a clear and public message that Bondcare Shaftesbury need to address these issues as a matter of urgency or face serious consequences.

“Our inspectors will return to the home in the near future. If we find that the provider is not making the required progress we won’t hesitate to use our legal powers to ensure residents are receiving the service they are entitled to expect.”

A spokesman for the home said: “We welcome all constructive feedback to allow us to continually improve the quality of care.

“The matter raised by the regulator is being addressed.

“We expect to be fully compliant by the agreed date and are confident that the CQC will be satisfied with our actions.”
