A CAR crashed through the front of a car rental showroom, leaving it embedded in a window and showering the premises in glass and debris.
Part of the front of the black Alfa Romeo miTo came to a halt inside the Enterprise Rent-a-Car premises in North Bridge Street, following the crash at 11.55am on Monday.
The car, which is thought to have been travelling along the opposite carriageway, collided with a silver Nissan Micra. It then careered through metal railings, and crashed into the shop front.
Police say there are no reports of injuries, however, one person, who was not in either vehicle, is thought to have been checked over by paramedics as a precaution.
Inside the premises, accessible via a side door from Barclay Street, the front of the miTo was clearly visible, surrounded by debris. A cordon had been placed around the reception desk. Workers declined to speak to the Echo but were visibly shocked.
Witness Michelle McFarlane, who works in the Harvest Energy filling station in North Bridge Street, told the Echo: “I just heard a screech and a bang. There was a silver car in the middle of the road and the other one was through the window. A customer came in saying one of the cars tried to overtake the other.”
The south bound bus lane towards Wearmouth Bridge was cordoned off after the crash. The road was fully reponed after the vehicle was recovered at about 1.20pm.
