FIREFIGHTERS were called to cut people free from their cars after two separate collisions.
Crews were called to the A181 near Wheatley Hill services, in County Durham, after receiving reports that people were trapped in their vehicles after a two-car smash at about 8.15am yesterday.
Two crews from Peterlee station and a special rescue unit were sent to the scene.
The two injured people managed to free themselves from their cars before the fire service arrived.
They were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment.
At about 8.25am, the special rescue unit was called to Edmonsley crossroads, Chester-le-Street, to help free people believed to be trapped after a car slammed into a tree.
Two fire engines from Durham station were also called to the scene.
A man and a woman managed to free themselves from the vehicle before the fire service arrived.
Paramedics checked them over and they were also taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for a precautionary check up.
