A DRIVER had to be taken to hospital after her car collided with a fire engine.
The rescue vehicle, from Sunderland Central station, and the silver Renault Megane crashed at the traffic lights on Durham Road, next to the Lidl supermarket, which was formerly The Prospect pub.
The driver of the Megane was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment after the incident, which happened yesterday afternoon.
She was not believed to be suffering from serious injuries, although she was said to be “very shaken”.
She was also seen being fitted with a neck brace by paramedics.
No one else was injured.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “We received a report at 2pm of a crash at the junction of Durham Road and Premier Road between a fire engine and a silver Renault Megane.
“The female driver has been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital to be checked over.”
A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Rescue Service confirmed that one of their appliances had been involved in an accident and that it was being investigated.
Traffic came to a standstill, but was reported to be moving freely an hour after the incident.
