BACK-from-the-dead fraudster John Darwin has been getting used to his new life in East Durham.

Having been released on licence from his six years and three months sentence for fraud, the canoe conman is living in a flat in Easington Colliery.

The former prison officer has also been seen heading for the benefits office, in Seaside Lane.

His new life is a long stretch from the one he tried to set up in Panama with his wife Anne, a former Blackhall Colliery beauty queen, on the back of a £250,000 life assurance scam.

Part of Darwin’s fraud included stealing the identity of dead Sunderland baby John Jones, to get a false passport to flee the country.

Anne Darwin, who was a receptionist at a Durham City medical centre, was jailed for six-and-a-half years for fraud and money laundering.

She could be released on licence in March.
