BUSINESS leaders have urged the Transport Secretary to formally declare the region will be part of High Speed Rail plans from the start.

The North East Chamber of Commerce said the Government risks sending a “dangerous message,” unless a guarantee is made in Parliament.

In a letter to Minister Philip Hammond, chief executive James Ramsbotham said: “High Speed Rail offers us a rare opportunity to transform the economic offer of the North East of England, while at the same time rebalancing market spaces throughout the UK.

“The Government must give a legislative guarantee that the high speed line will continue North to Leeds and beyond to the North East in due course.”
