Call for cat lovers to take a pet

URGENT homes are needed for abandoned Wearside cats.

Carol O’Brien takes in unwanted strays and says she has had “the year from hell” trying to cope with demand.

Now she is pleading with Sunderland families to help her rehome some of them.

Carol, who works for charity Animal Krackers, is making a desperate plea for homes.

She said: “I desperately need homes for these beautiful, friendly cats.

“Animal Krackers is opening a new cat shelter, but the demand is so high I’m afraid it will be full straight away.

“I have 15 cats wanting homes, all aged between two and seven years.

“If anyone feels they can give a cat a responsible home for life then I would love them to get in touch.”

Carol recently helped to rehome 30 kittens and says the problem has been made worse by the recession.

She has also noticed a rise in people selling animals on Facebook to make quick money.

She said: “It is really bad. I am hearing some horror stories.

“I’ve set up my own page, Sunderland Cat Rescue, but generally Facebook has made things very tough on animals.”
