The 63 volunteers handled more than 1,200 calls from generous members of the public who wanted to donate to the cause.

Current figures indicate this year’s fundraising pot has already raised more than £56million.

Employees at the Rainton site showed their support by wearing their favourite sports kit to raise money for the appeal, at the same time as manning 50 phone lines throughout the night.

Mike Davies, member of the volunteering team, said: “Call centres up and down the country play a vital role for Sport Relief. By giving the general public a quick and easy way to donate we are doing our bit to help an incredibly worthy cause.

“We were delighted to be nominated as a regional call centre for the second year running after last year’s Comic Relief success. This was a real opportunity for us to represent both npower and the North East again, and so I’m pleased to say the overwhelming enthusiasm by staff has made this a complete success.”

Chris Thewlis, npower’s Customer Services Director, said: “I’m extremely proud of the volunteers at Rainton who gave up their time to support the appeal. Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to have fun, raise cash and change lives and it’s an honour for npower to be a part of it.”
